My grandfather passed before I turned one. I had heard stories about his photographic plights the decades after. His attempts to capture things in motion. His frustrations and breakdowns - straight shouting fits really - and his commitment to the craft, creating a darkroom in the single bathroom meant to serve an entire family and a garage filled with experiments and small makeshift studios. A photographer in the Army, once he returned from service he was committed to photography as the vessel for his art.

 

We only briefly met in person but we are deeply connected by our mutual affinity for photogrphy. We find our way to each other as he observes my expression and I observe his. We want the same thing - we want you to feel everything.

 

Jacqui is a black & white analog photographer. Her cameras of passion, a Pentax K2 and Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta, were both used by her grandfather in the 60’s and 70’s. For Jacqui, black and white photography is not about what is on display but about the opportunity to connect to the viewer. Each visit to her work a connection is created, unique to each person who chooses to engage. It is space - a chance to link one individuals experience with another. It is this that makes photography the most intimate - the intersection of her creativity and a single humans life experience.

 

Further notes: her home darkroom is affectionately called the Dark Lounge, her processes entirely analog from making image in camera to making image under enlarger.
